Powers:
Magneto possesses the power to control all forms of magnetism. He can shape and manipulate magnetic fields that exist naturally or artificially. Magneto's power is, for all practical purposes, limitless. He can use his magnetic powers in more than one way simultaneously, he can completely assemble a complicated machine within seconds through his powers, he can also erect magnetic force fields with a high degree of impenetrability around himself for protection because his personal magnetic field (i.e., the magnetic forces surrounding his own body) repels projectiles and absorbs energy attacks, Magneto is invulnerable to most harm when his personal field is active. His protective field has withstood forces as significant as the detonation of a nuclear warhead.
Additionaly can even use the power of the earths magnetic field itself to resist gravity and levitat/fly without the need for wings or physical exertion at high speeds, and can survive in the vacuum of deep space.
He can also channel his magnetic powers through his own body so as to temporarily increase his strength, stamina, and agility to superhuman levels. Magneto has been depicted using his powers to levitate objects as heavy as a nuclear submarine; the maximum quantity of mass that he can levitate at one time is unknown.
Although Magneto’s primary power is control over magnetism, he can also project or manipulate any form of energy that is part of the electromagnetic spectrum, including visible light, radio waves, ultraviolet light, gamma rays, and x-rays. Magneto has also exhibited powers of astral projection and telepathy, and has claimed to be able to control the minds of others, though his abilities along these lines appear to be minimal. He is able to perceive the world around him as patterns of electromagnetic energy, and can perceive the electrical auras given off by living beings. He has demonstrated the ability to produce electricity as well as electromagnetic radiation. A few times Magneto has demonstrated the capacity to produce a wormhole, and to safely teleport himself and others by means of the wormhole.
Magneto’s ability to wield his superhuman powers effectively is dependent upon his physical condition. When severely injured, his body is unable to withstand the strain of manipulating great amounts of magnetic forces.
Abilities: Magneto has mastered many technological fields, and is an expert on genetic manipulation and engineering, with knowledge far beyond that of contemporary science. He is considered to be a genius in these fields. He can mutate humans in order to give them superhuman powers, or create adult clones of human beings and then manipulate the genetic structures of these clones during their development. He has also learned how to create artificial living beings. Magneto is also an excellent strategist, both in actual battles and games of chess.
Weakness: Physical Condition: Magneto's ability to wield his superhuman powers effectively is dependent upon his physical condition. When severely injured, his body is unable to withstand the strain of manipulating great amounts of energy. When his powers are not at their peak, he also appears to have greater difficulty controlling forces other than magnetism. There is a possibility that Magneto simply has a genetic predisposition to magnetism that simply makes it easy for him to manipulate it. Magneto also is limited by the fact that he needs food, water and oxygen in order to survive. He is also suseptible to physical and mental fatigue that can ultimately affect his ability to adequately use his powers.
Paraphernalia and Equipment:
Magneto's helmet is built to shield his mind from all psychic probes, attacks and manipulation. The costume that Magneto wears is actually a type of armor that he has created through the use of his magnetic powers. The costume is actually an amalgam of various lightweight, but highly durable, metallic alloys that further protects him from many forms of physical injury.
Weapons: None other then his powers.
Uniform:
Magneto sports several uniforms these are a few:
Personality: Cold and calculating Magneto is a born leader and feels it is his destiny to see that his people are free from persecution and the hatred and ire of humanity. He has a strong sense of honor and responsibility especially towards his mutant people and these urges, feelings and thoughts have in the past driven him to do many acts considered both illegal and unspeakable. Throughout his years though Magnus has had many experiences that have also softened his view of humanity and helped him re-evaluate methods for obtaining his goals. He has in recent years become mellower in his practices, less extreme in his policies and though still wielding an iron fist he now covers it with a velvet glove. His ultimate goal for the freedom and dominance of his people has only changed slightly with the help of his best friend and greatest adversary Charles Xavier. He is starting to believe that perhaps with the right people leading the way cohabitation and equality between mutants and humanity may be possible. He is however not completely convinced of this yet but will let time tell in the end.
History:
Born Max Eisenhardt in Germany in late 1925, Magneto and his family were persecuted for being of the Jewish faith, were ultimately shot by the Nazis and buried in a mass grave. Magnus successfully manages to survive, only to be captured a short time later and sent to Auschwitz in Poland to work in the Sonderkommando. While in Auschwitz, Magnus fell in love with a Gypsy girl named Magda, with whom he escaped the prison camp. Magnus and Magda married several years later and a daughter, Anya, was born unto them. After moving his family to the Soviet city of Vinnitsa, Magnus' daughter Anya was tragically killed in a fire, while a mob of people prevented him from rescuing her. Enraged, the young Magneto's powers manifested uncontrollably, killing the mob and destroying a part of Vinnitsa. Magda terrified by her husband’s unnatural powers fled only to discovering months later she is pregnant again. Magda would 9 months later give birth to the mutant twins Quicksilver and the Scarlet Witch unbeknownst to Magneto. Magda presumably died after giving birth to the mutant twins at Wundagore Mountain. Shortly after Magda's disappearance, Magnus was viciously hunted for the deaths in Vinnitsa, while attempting to search for his former wife, thus forcing him to pay a renowned forger, Georg Odekirk, to create the cover identity of "Erik Lehnsherr the Sinte gypsy" for him.
Magnus would later meet Charles Xavier while in Israel working at a psychiatric hospital near Haifa. There, lengthy debates were held by the two regarding the consequences humanity faces with the rise of mutants, though neither revealed at the time to the other that they both in fact possessed mutant powers. In this time they became the best of friends either would ever have in there lifetimes unknowing they would also become the worst of enemies in time. That time was soon to come as during there continued tenure in the hospital they were soon forced to reveal their inherent abilities to one another, while facing Baron Von Strucker and HYDRA. Following the battle, Magneto left, realizing that his and Xavier's views are incompatible.
Magneto's experience in the Auschwitz concentration camp initially shaped his outlook on the situation that mutants faced in the world. Determined to keep such atrocities from ever being committed against mutant-kind, he was willing to use deadly force to protect his fellow mutants. He believed that mutants what he designated as "Homo superior" would in time become the dominant life form on the planet. However, he continually wavers between wanting peaceful existence with Homo sapiens and wanting to enforce his superiority over all humanity.
Magneto's first recorded villainous act was to attack a United States military base called Cape Citadel. He is thwarted by Charles Xavier's mutant students, the X-Men. Soon after he would go on to form the Brotherhood of Mutants and with there help briefly conquered the South American nation of San Marco in the hopes of establishing a mutant homeland there, but was once again foiled by the X-Men.
After several unsuccessful attempts at rallying more mutants to his cause, Magneto tried to force the allegiance of the Stranger. A powerful alien being, the Stranger not fooled and not one to be a pawn encased Magneto in a special cocoon and spirited him away to another planet, a laboratory world. Magneto's Brotherhood splintered after this, and Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch desert him for the first time but not the last.
After a battle against the X-Men and the Avengers, Magneto was presumed dead, but managed to survive by using his powers to burrow through the ocean floor into a series of caverns that led him to the secluded Antarctic prehistoric jungle of the Savage Land. There, he used his knowledge of genetic engineering to mutate local savages into super-powered beings he dubbed the Savage Land Mutates. Soon after, Magneto was again opposed by the X-Men, and was once more presumed killed in an explosion. Yet again, Magneto survived, finding himself in the Savage Land city known as the “Land of the Dead” where he discovered a mind-numbing gas that he intended to use against mankind. He projected his astral self to the native peoples, manipulating them into building an airship filled with the gas. His plan was once again foiled by the X-Men, and he fled into the ocean.
Rescued by Namor the Sub-Mariner, Magneto was taken to Atlantis, where he quickly subjugated the Atlantean army and launched an attack on the surface world. He was opposed by the Fantastic Four, who used a feedback machine to trap him in a cone of his own power. Later freed, Magneto continued his genetic experiments and, using technology abandoned by the Inhumans Phaeder and Maelstrom, he created Alpha, whom he dubbed the “Ultimate Mutant”. Alpha turned on his creator, however, reducing Magneto and the Brotherhood to infancy. The baby Magneto was transferred to Muir Island, where geneticist Moira MacTaggert attempted to control Magneto's insane rages by manipulating his DNA so that his body would be better able to tolerate his powers. Magneto was later restored to adulthood by the Shi’ar alien Eric the Red, and initially his psychotic and destructive behavior seemed to return when he attacked the new team of X-Men off of Muir Island, and then kidnapped them, holding them prisoner under a volcano in Antarctica. After battling the X-Men in Antarctica, Magneto retreated to Asteroid M, where his mind began to heal, and MacTaggert's genetic changes began to restore his sanity.
Magneto next tried to hold the world hostage to force world peace and disarmament, destroying a Russian city after warning the population to evacuate. He also sank a Russian submarine with all hands onboard after the vessel attacked him. The X-Men once more stopped Magneto, but during the battle Magneto almost killed the young mutant Kitty Pryde, an act that shocked him, and forced him to reevaluate his life. Following the inadvertent destruction of Asteroid M by the extraterrestrial Warlock, Magneto crashed to Earth and was rescued from the ocean by fishing boat captain Aletys "Lee" Forrester who took him to an island within the Bermuda Triangle to recuperate. There, Lee experienced Magneto’s “human” side and the pair had a brief romance. A remorseful Magneto then turned himself over to the World Court to be tried for his crimes, and would have certainly been found guilty if not for the intervention of Fenris, the twin children of Baron Strucker, who sought revenge against Magneto and Xavier for their intervention in their father’s plans years earlier. The courthouse was destroyed, and Magneto and Xavier were left alone as Xavier’s body deteriorated beyond repair. After Xavier’s love Lilandra arrived with the space pirates the Starjammers to heal him with Shi’ar technology, Xavier made Magneto promise to protect their dream and take over as Headmaster of his School. Magneto reluctantly agreed, and came to supervise the fledgling New Mutants team while also joining the X-Men on missions.
This would not last forever as circumstances would eventually pit Magneto against the X-Men and the world once more. Magneto set about consolidating both his mutant and political power, but faced opposition from the renegade Mutate Zealot, his son Quicksilver, and Rogue. After Magneto defeated Zealot’s forces, Rogue left, and he had his Acolyte Voght manipulate Quicksilver into staying as a member of the cabinet, in the hope that he would at last learn to be a loyal son. Soon after, Magneto was revealed to be a member of the Twelve, a group of mutants supposedly destined to usher in a golden age for mutant kind. He and the others were captured by the eternal mutant Apocalypse, who sought to usurp the power of the Twelve for himself; however, Magneto’s weakness short-circuited the machine. In the ensuing clash, Magneto discovered that he could commandeer the magnetic powers of the mutant heroine Polaris and use them as his own. When Apocalypse was defeated, Magneto returned to Genosha with Polaris, and began teaching her to expand her control, while using her as a front for his own power. Over the next six months, Magneto managed to rebuild much of the war-torn country, but a rebellion in Carrion Cove proved a thorn in his side. The rebels had discovered technology in the city that they felt could not be allowed to fall into Magneto’s hands, namely a genetic manipulation chamber from the process once used to create the Genoshan Mutates which would allow Magneto to restore himself to full power. Though the U.N., rogue Acolytes, Cortez, the Avengers, and Polaris all opposed him, Magneto tore down the city as a distraction to allow him to access the chamber and restore his DNA, making him more powerful than ever before.
Soon after Magneto returned to Genosha to once again take control of the mutant ruled island nation. It took him less then a day to once again gain monarchy over the nation and its people and for several months he began preparations for a full scale assault on the United States. However these plans were put on hold when Charles Xavier came to him and shared a vision that seemed to change Erik over night. His plans then changed to solidifying the borders of his nation and making sure his people were safe from attackers rather then training them to be the attackers.
Magnetos reign of Genosha once again came to an end when word of his daughter, Wanda, reached him. Her mental state was not good and she needed him. He left to be with her and once in his possession he handed her over to the care of Dr. Strange and Xavier to help with her broken mind. In the mean time the evil Mutant Apocalypse attacked Genosha with a massive nuclear attack. Devastating the island and killing most of its inhabitants. After hearing of this travesty Magneto left to battle Apocalypse atop Mount Everest. The battle was intense and Erik found himself near death at the hands of the ancient mutant, but a seething hatred for Apocalypse brought Magneto back from the brink and with a powerful magnetic attack on Apocalypse’s own metallic enhancements, as well as his very brain. Magneto watched as Apocalypse seemed to melt and crumble before him and fall into the darkness below.
Erik collapsed, expecting death to take him but as unconsciousness took hold Toad, his faithful servant came to the rescue with a small shuttle and brought his master back to Asteroid M to recover.
There Magneto labored to survive for many months, during this time the Alien War took place on earth. He was regretfully not a part of it but did watch many of the events from his healing tube on the station, including the death of his best friend Charles Xavier. It sadden his heart and almost broke his very will to see his friend struck down but he was determined from then on to honor his friends memory as best he could.
His life of evil was soon to come to an end after Charles Xavier and a call from the Avenger and Registration advocate Tony Stark. Stark would offer him the position of Headmaster of the Xavier Institute. Taking place weeks after the Alien War and days before Tony’s own assassination attempt Magneto found this offer a strange request but once explained that it was one of Charles’ final wishes and that Tony and Captain America, despite their heated past, felt he was the best man for the job, Erik Lehnsherr decided to take them up on the offer and help teach the next generation of mutants as his friend would have wished. He also saw this as a chance at a new life and perhaps redemption in the new world that seemed to be emerging around him. He is not yet sure if this is the path for him… if the word has truly changed enough or if he is just fooling himself or being tricked… but for now he is determined to make a difference…
