X-Men - The combat arm of the Xavier Institute, formed by Professor Charles Xavier out of the most capable mutants attending - or more usually teaching at - his school. The X-Men are commonly believed to be the world's most powerful mutant team, and work both to prevent disasters as well as to foster relations between mutants and 'normal' humans. Since the death of Xavier, Erik Magnus Lehnsherr, aka Magneto - formerly the mortal enemy of the team - has taken over both the Institute and overall command of the X-Men, though he has committed himself to most, if not all, of the team's previous goals.
Avengers - "The Earth's Mightiest Heroes", beginning as a group of heroes agreeing to face down the worst threats of the age together, the team was later funded directly by the U.S. Government, and later still by the U.N., turning the formerly American group into an international peacekeeping force. Because of its nature as an affiliation of separate heroes, rather than a team culled from a specific group such as the X-Men, the Avengers have broken apart and reformed several times, and tend to rotate out members as team members become available, making for an almost constantly changing roster based around a few nearly constant members such as Captain America and Iron Man. Currently limited to an active-duty strength of seven members by vote of the U.N..
New World Order - From within the shadows left in the wake of the Alien War the greatest, post powerful and resourceful villains have begun to band together, pulling collectively to form the New World Order. A group dedicated to the utter subjugation of the world through sheer power, force of will and intelligence. The group feigns complete equality among its members but in truth it is primarily lead by prominent figures such as Norman Osborn and Victor von Doom, those with the power and resources to further the orders goals. They have begun to cast a shadow over the bright future set in place by Captain America and Iron Man fully intending to shape the world to their liking. Many would consider this clandestine group to be the panicle of the villain hierarchy.
Unaffiliated Good - Those who work for the cause of justice and defend those who need defending, but are not part of any specific group of heroes. These are the 'freelance' heroes of the world, working where their conscience and sense of duty directs them. Since many of these are not registered heroes, they are also outlaws of a sort, and may come into conflict with those of like alignment simply because of this fact.
Unaffiliated Evil - The opposite end of the spectrum from the Unaffiliated Good, these tend to be chaotic villains with no desire - or opportunity, perhaps - to band together with others to further their own goals.
Unaffiliated Neutral - The wildcards of the world, these are the mercenaries and the apathetic, people who have no inclination towards good or evil, but simply act how they wish to act.
Registered Hero - A hero who has decided to become part of the Superhuman Registration Act, making their heroic escapades legal. These people have shown aptitude and demonstrated their willingness to use their power for good in a regulated manner, and form the backbone of the world's defense against evil where the teams of heroes cannot.
Brotherhood of Mutants - A group originally created by Magneto to further the cause of mutantkind - the species Homo superior - by all means necessary, especially at the expense of the weaker Homo sapiens. Widely regarded as a terrorist organization and the mortal enemies of the X-Men, this group of mutant 'freedom fighters' has lost much of its direction with the loss of its leader to the X-Men, but continues to operate as a general detriment to society.
Sinister Six/Syndicate – Originally created to defeat Spider-Man the Sinister Six has always been a grouping of powerful super-human villains who have joined together for mutual purposes. The Sinister Syndicate often considered the B team and also consisting of super powered villains has also had similar purposes but less success often culminating in them being considered a joke. It was decided by the remaining members of both that the teams should combine forces and powers to in order to defeat their common enemies and prove themselves to be true villains by branching out into bigger and more lucrative crimes. Through this merger they have truly become a team to be reckoned with and feared.
SHEILD Agent - Agents of the Strategic Hazard Intervention, Espionage, and Logistics Directorate are more often without powers than with, but make up for it with the vast and powerful arsenal of weapons and technology at SHIELD's disposal, much of it designed at one point or another by the greatest minds in the world, the Helicarrier being the prime example. SHIELD is, as a unit, dedicated to averting disaster and war worldwide, with a focus on defending the people of various nations from superpowered threats that their own militaries are often ill-equipped to face. SHIELD's role goes far beyond open combat, however, and the unit is focused even more on the prevention of such events than on their resolution, meaning that SHIELD agents often work undercover and without support, in all manner of situations.
