Today was to be the first day back at work, back in the office after Thomas’ death and to say she wasn’t looking forward to it was an understatement. That morning she’d gotten up earlier than normal and checked on Joey who was sleeping soundly before making herself a cup of coffee and flicking the tv on to watch the news. It wasn’t until the young boy had woken and she’d gotten him ready for school did she herself make any attempt to get herself ready for the day she faced. Getting dressed in a simple black pencil skirt and white blouse she then went on to pull her hair back into a tight ponytail before grabbing her keys and coat. It was time to face the outside world and she had no choice but to, for it was Joey’s first day at his new school and she wanted to be there to see him off, get him there and make sure he was safe and that no one harmed him on the way.
Once he was safely within the school walls and she had given him a kiss goodbye she proceeded back into the centre of Manhattan, heading back to the tower to pick up a few documents she’d forgotten to lift on her way to take Joey to school. She was almost tempted to stay in the apartment as she had hidden in there the last few weeks, not venturing out. Even though Thomas had been killed according to the Hood because of Tony, it had been Tony who had picked up the pieces for her since her husbands death, he’d arranged the apartment in the Tower, he’d seen to it that someone brought her groceries and not once had he pestered her about work. The grieving process was hard for Thena and she had yet to face anyone, perhaps the last few weeks spent cooped up in the apartment had not helped with that, but she really hadn’t felt able. Least of all when she knew all she would get asked was if she was alright, how she was holding up and then there would be the whispers and talking behind her back about what exactly had happened and of course those few who speculated and started rumors that it had been at her doing that her husband had been murdered.
Stopping in the street outside a cafe she paused trying to decide whether or not returning to the apartment was a good idea, she could go back and end up locking herself away again or she could enter the very cafe she stood outside and have a coffee before heading to work, she was sure Tony would understand if she did not present him with those documents and schematics today. Sighing she chose to enter the cafe and order a coffee. She waited for it before grabbing it and the day’s newspaper before sitting at a table sipping the coffee slowly while trying to focus on the headlines of the paper even if she was unable to take them in properly she felt she had to try. She only hoped that as she sat there no one recognised her from the photographs the daily bugle had published of her as she had attended Thomas’ funeral...of course it hadn’t been just a small article either, it had been a three page spread about the brutal murder of her husband, interviews with certain law enforcement, photographs of the warehouse in which he’d been found as well as Jonas usual smearing of Tony’s name, it had almost been reminiscent of how he smeared every other hero’s name but this had been different for her because he’d used a private matter to generate publicity for himself and hatred of the heroes that defended most of the people of this city unknowingly.
